JSR Genetics was founded in East Yorkshire by John Sykes Rymer in 1982, then under the name JSR Healthbred. John Rymer was an established farmer with a rapidly growing business where he bred his own livestock. Local farmers were coming to John to buy healthy, robust boars and gilts for their own herds, and by 1984 John had started exporting pigs to Germany and the business went from strength to strength.

After years of successful trading and several acquisitions, in 2015 JSR Genetics partnered with Topigs Norsvin, the world’s most innovative pig genetics company. Based in the Netherlands, the global business Topigs Norsvin is renowned for its innovative approach in implementing new technologies and its continuous focus on cost-efficient pig production.

Together JSR Genetics and Topigs Norsvin focus on innovative breeding meaning we can achieve improved genetic progress each year. Our genetic improvement is based on sustainability and efficiency, with a focus on balanced breeding and total feed efficiency, with a reputation for easy care animals.

In January 2025 JSR Genetics was acquired by Cranswick plc, a leading UK food producer and supplier of premium, fresh and added-value food products, as well as its own herd of high welfare pigs. JSR Genetics however remains a separate entity within the Cranswick portfolio and continues to supply our customers with the very best pig genetics.
