Our Story

JSR is one of the largest family-owned farming companies in the UK, incorporating JSR Farms and JSR Genetics.

JSR Farms is an integrated arable business, farming over 3,000 hectares in East Yorkshire of combinable crops, peas, potatoes, as well as a Stabiliser cattle suckler herd.

JSR Farms runs alongside JSR Genetics, a highly successful pig genetics company and commercial breeding herd, all owned by the Rymer family.

The two businesses run side by side with all the wheat, barley and rye grown fed to our pig herd, the straw used for bedding and in return the organic manures are returned to the land to improve soil health and crop yields. It is a cycle that has worked since JSR Farms was founded in 1958 and is still at the heart of the business today.

The history of JSR Genetics

JSR Genetics was founded in East Yorkshire by John Sykes Rymer in 1982, then under the name JSR Healthbred. John Rymer had founded JSR Farms in 1958 and by then was an established farmer with a rapidly growing business. Local farmers were coming to John for healthy robust boars and gilts for their own herds, and by 1984 John had started exporting pigs to Germany and the business went from strength to strength.

After years of successful trading and several acquisitions, in 2015 JSR Genetics partnered with Topigs Norsvin, the world’s second largest pig genetics company. Based in the Netherlands, the global business Topigs Norsvin is renowned for its innovative approach in implementing new technologies and its continuous focus on cost-efficient pig production.

Together JSR Genetics and Topigs Norsvin focus on innovative breeding meaning we can achieve improved genetic progress each year. Our genetic improvement is based on sustainability and efficiency, with a focus on balanced breeding and total feed efficiency, with a reputation for easy care animals.
